Costa Metallinos is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Brock University, leading research in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry. His laboratory develops novel chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and ferrocene-based catalysts for asymmetric synthesis applications.
Key research areas include:
- Design of benzimidazolylidenes from phenanthrolines for asymmetric catalysis
- Stereoselective synthesis of pyrroloimidazol(in)ylidenes
- Enantioselective preparation of planar chiral aminoferrocenes
- Development of L-proline hydantoin-derived chiral auxiliaries
His work contributes to advancing methodologies in stereoselective transformations, with applications in pharmaceutical synthesis and materials science. Current projects focus on iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation using novel ferrocenyl NHC ligands.
Research group members include graduate students and collaborators investigating catalytic systems for organic transformations. Laboratory facilities in Cairns 542 support synthetic chemistry and catalyst characterization.
