Georges El-Howayek is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico, with research spanning optical communication systems and nanoscale semiconductor devices. He earned his B.S. at Lebanese American University and both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of New Mexico. His work focuses on avalanche photodiode optimization for quantum communication applications.
- Lebanese American University - B.S.
- University of New Mexico - M.S.
- University of New Mexico - Ph.D.
As a key contributor to the Nanopillar Optical Antenna Avalanche Detector (NOAAD) project, he developed 3D electric field models that enabled gain-bandwidth products exceeding 200 GHz. His co-invented U.S. patent demonstrates technical innovation in dynamic biasing techniques for photodiode sensitivity optimization.
El-Howayek's research bridges optical antenna design with stochastic process analysis, advancing applications in:
- Free-space optical communication
- Cognitive radio spectrum sharing
- Nanoscale photodetection systems
- Wireless sensor network optimization
His collaborative work with NSF, AFOSR, and DARPA funded projects demonstrates sustained impact in semiconductor device physics and plasmonic engineering.
