George Z. Papageorgiou

George Z. Papageorgiou is an Associate Professor of Industrial Chemistry and Technology of Polymers in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Ioannina, Greece. He has held this position since March 2019, having previously served as Assistant Professor at the same institution from September 2014. His academic career includes post-doctoral research at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a Scientific Associate position at International Hellenic University.

Dr. Papageorgiou's research focuses on sustainable polymer chemistry, particularly biobased and furan-based polyesters as alternatives to petroleum-derived plastics. His work spans multiple areas including sustainable industrial chemistry, polymer nanocomposites, pharmaceutical technology, and advanced materials characterization. He has made significant contributions to understanding the synthesis, crystallization behavior, thermal properties, and biodegradability of novel polyesters derived from renewable resources.

His recent publications (2019-2020) demonstrate a strong focus on furan-based polyesters, particularly poly(ethylene furanoate) and related copolymers. These works examine molecular dynamics, thermal stability, nanocomposite formation, and structure-property relationships. His research shows a clear trend toward developing sustainable materials with tailored properties for specific applications, often incorporating nanofillers to enhance performance characteristics.

Dr. Papageorgiou serves as Associate Editor for the 'Journal of Renewable Materials' and the 'Green and Sustainable Chemistry in Polymer Science' section of 'Polymers' journal. He has also guest-edited multiple special issues on sustainable polymers in prominent journals, reflecting his leadership in the field of green polymer science.

His teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in Polymer Chemistry, Polymeric and Composite Materials, and Chemical Processes, as well as graduate courses in Chemistry-Physical Chemistry-Technology of Polymers and Technology of Materials from Petroleum and Biomass. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students in the Department of Chemistry at University of Ioannina and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
