George Vasdravellis is an Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society, Heriot-Watt University. He holds an MEng in Civil Engineering from Democritus University of Thrace (2003) and a PhD from the Polytechnic School of Milan (2007). After working as a structural engineer in Greece and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Western Sydney (Australia), he joined Heriot-Watt University in 2013, advancing to his current position in 2018. His research focuses on sustainable structural systems, nonlinear analysis of steel/concrete composites, and multi-hazard mitigation.
Research Interests:
- Structural behavior of steel/concrete composites
- Seismic resilience and multi-hazard mitigation
- Finite element modeling and experimental validation
- Sustainable construction and deconstruction
His work explores novel structural typologies, such as self-centering systems and demountable connectors, to enhance building robustness and sustainability. Key contributions include advancements in post-tensioned connections, energy-dissipating devices, and additive manufacturing applications in construction. He manages the Seismic Rig and Losenhausen facilities, supporting large-scale experimental testing.
Collaborations involve global institutions, focusing on steel structures, corrosion resistance, and AI-driven modeling. His research aligns with UN SDGs for sustainable infrastructure and disaster risk reduction.
