George Tannous is a Professor and George Dembroski Investment Scholar at the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island, an MBA from Michigan State University, and additional degrees from the University of Toledo and Lebanese University. His teaching focuses on investments, corporate finance, personal finance, and derivatives. He pioneered two undergraduate investment courses in 2012, managing a student portfolio that grew to over $1.92 million by 2019, earning him the 2016 Provost’s College Award for Outstanding Teaching.
His research spans income smoothing by banks, market microstructure, capital structure, derivatives valuation, and post-merger performance. His work appears in journals like Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and Financial Review. Current research explores credit derivatives, institutional ownership in family firms, and equity derivatives market dynamics.
Dr. Tannous has contributed educational materials for the Institute of Canadian Bankers and Certified General Accountants of Canada. His courses emphasize practical application, including managing real investment portfolios and ethical considerations. His research consistently bridges theoretical frameworks with real-world financial challenges faced by businesses and individuals.
Key awards include the 2016 teaching award and recognition for case studies in management compensation (ASAC Finance Division Honourable Mention Award). His work on export financing constraints for Canadian SMEs highlights his focus on practical solutions for small enterprises.
