George Shorten is a Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine and Foundation Director of the ASSERT Centre at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. He previously served as Dean of UCC’s School of Medicine (2010–13) and was an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. A pioneering consultant anaesthetist at Cork University Hospital (1997) and honorary roles at other institutions, he was the first to hold his professorial chair at UCC in 1997.

Labs and Teams: He leads the ASSERT Centre (Applied Simulation & Surgical Education Research and Training), a hub for interdisciplinary research in medical simulation and education. He has held leadership roles in national and international bodies, including chairing the Education Committee of the European Pain Federation and the Council of Deans of Medical Schools in Ireland.
