Dr. George Serghiou is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the Chemical Engineering department. His research focuses on materials science and solid-state chemistry, particularly high-pressure synthesis of novel materials. He holds a position in the Materials and Processes Research Institute.
Key research interests include crystal growth of compounds like wüstite (Fe₁₋ₓO), semiconductor alloys (GeSn, Si-Ge), and nitride materials under extreme conditions. He has developed methods using diamond anvil cells and high-temperature/pressure environments to create previously unstable solid solutions.
His work integrates techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and advanced crystallographic analysis. Notable projects include EPSRC-funded studies on phase relations in the C-Si-Ge-Sn system (2002–2005).
Collaborations span institutions like the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. His publications emphasize structural characterization of novel materials and their potential in advanced applications.
