George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, renowned for foundational contributions to social theory and contemporary sociological concepts. His work spans five decades with global academic impact.
His research centers on social theory, consumer culture, and globalization processes, most famously articulated through the concept of McDonaldization – the rationalization of society through efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. Current work examines Bitcoin and blockchain through lenses of prosumption (the merger of production and consumption), globalization, and digital consumer culture.
