George Mashour is the Robert B. Sweet Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan Medical School, where he serves as Chair of Anesthesiology, Professor of Neurosurgery, Pharmacology, and Psychology, and Senior Associate Dean. He directs the Michigan Psychedelic Collaborative and serves as Scientific Director of the Center for Consciousness Science.
Dr. Mashour's research focuses on the neuroscience of consciousness, particularly how anesthetic and psychedelic compounds affect brain network organization. His work spans multiple disciplines including anesthesiology, neuroscience, and consciousness studies, with significant contributions to understanding how psilocybin induces large-scale brain network reorganization and how these changes relate to altered states of consciousness.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on psychedelic therapy applications for conditions like fibromyalgia, the neural mechanisms underlying sleep regulation, and the environmental impact of anesthetic practices. His research group has made significant contributions to understanding the dose-dependent effects of psilocybin on functional brain networks in rodent models and has pioneered work on sustainable 'green anesthesia' practices that reduce healthcare's carbon footprint without compromising patient care.
As Director of the Michigan Psychedelic Collaborative and Scientific Director of the Center for Consciousness Science, Dr. Mashour leads interdisciplinary research teams investigating the intersection of consciousness, anesthesia, and psychedelic science. His work on the Green Anesthesia Initiative has demonstrated that switching to environmentally friendlier anesthetic agents can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% within one year without affecting patient safety or outcomes.
