George Markopoulos is a Permanent Assistant Professor at the Department of Mediterranean Studies, University of the Aegean. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he also completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Philology. His career includes teaching roles at the University of the Aegean, Democritus University of Thrace, University of Nicosia, and the Inter-Institutional Postgraduate Program in Language Technology (Cyprus). He has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of the Aegean and served as a visiting researcher at University College London and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
His research focuses on the morphosyntax-phonology interface, emphasizing cross-linguistic analysis of grammatical structures, particularly in Southeast Mediterranean languages. He has contributed to international conferences and publications, addressing topics like artificial grammar learning and language technology applications. His work aligns with projects such as DIAFONIEN and studies on education of foreigners and returned students.
He has received scholarships from the Hellenic Republic and participated in initiatives like the Kymisala Archaeological Survey and Archaeological Research at Kastrouli (2016–2021). His contributions extend to academic governance, including roles in undergraduate and postgraduate program development at the Department of Mediterranean Studies.
