Research & Creative Work:
Young’s research integrates Slavic philology, intellectual history, and American art criticism. His book-length studies illuminate the esoteric thought of Nikolai Fedorov—father of Russian Cosmism—and the marine paintings and pedagogical legacy of early-20th-century American artist Charles H. Woodbury. Parallel to scholarship, he maintains an active creative practice, publishing lyric poetry and Russian-to-English literary translations that foreground spiritual and ecological themes.
Since 1979 he and his wife have co-owned a fine-arts auction house specializing in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century American and European paintings, activity that complements his art-historical writing and provides hands-on engagement with material culture of the period.
