Dr George Kyris is an Associate Professor in International Politics at the University of Birmingham's Department of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS), housed within the School of Government. His research focuses on state recognition, international organizations, conflict management, and sovereignty debates, with a specialization in contested statehood cases like Cyprus, Kosovo, and Palestine. He holds a PhD in Politics (University of Manchester, 2011) and has held roles including Leverhulme Early Career Fellow (2017–2020), POLSIS Postgraduate Research Lead, and admissions leadership roles.
Key projects include a Leverhulme Fellowship examining international organizations' roles in statehood conflicts, a University of Birmingham-PRIO workshop series on conflict resolution in Cyprus, Georgia, and Kosovo, and contributions to the OSCE and UK Foreign Office reviews. He is a member of the ECPR Research Network on Statehood, Sovereignty, and Conflict and regularly publishes in journals like European Journal of International Relations and Geopolitics.
Dr Kyris actively engages with policy, contributing to EU External Affairs Sub-Committee evidence and OSCE reports. His media work includes regular contributions to The Guardian and The Conversation, and he co-founded the ECPR research network. Awards include the Higher Education Academy Fellowship (2018).
