George K. Wong is an Associate Professor and Graduate Studies Director in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering. With over 17 years of R&D and 14 years of deepwater development experience in the industry, primarily at Shell, he brings extensive practical expertise to his academic role since 2016.
Dr. Wong's educational background includes a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University (1985), an M.S. and B.S. in Civil Engineering & Materials Science from the University of California at Davis (1979, 1977), and a Professional Engineer license in California.
- Ph.D., Civil Engineering, Stanford University, 1985
- M.S., Civil Engineering, University of California at Davis, 1979
- B.S., Civil Engineering & Materials Science, University of California at Davis, 1977
- P.E., Civil Engineer, State of California
His research focuses on geomechanics, well integrity and containment, sand management, multiphase flows, and well operations for injectors and producers. Key areas include constitutive behavior of reservoir rocks, sand control completions, well production operations (unloading, bean-up, ramp-up), and hydraulic fracturing. His work bridges theoretical geomechanics with practical field applications in deepwater environments.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on experimental and numerical studies of unconsolidated sands, stress path effects, and sand management. Trends include the application of machine learning for formation damage prediction, advanced modeling of hydraulic fracturing and diverter systems, and innovative methods for well surveillance and gas-kick detection in deepwater operations.
Dr. Wong has received several prestigious awards, including:
- SPE Distinguished Membership (2015)
- SPE Gulf Coast Regional Completion Optimization and Technology Award (2013)
- Shell Ursa Princess Water Flood – 1st Water Injection Recognition (2008)
- Shell Ursa System Selection Recognition (1995)
- Shell Development Company, The President’s Award for Team Excellence, Finalist (1992)
As Graduate Studies Director, he mentors multiple PhD students, including Sabyasachi Prakash, Ahmed ALDughather, Xuejia Du, Bo Luo, and Michael Effiong. His research is supported by grants such as "Alpha Wave Height with Light Weight Proppant", "Injector Experiments in Sand Pack", and "Hydrocarbon Influx Behavior within a Deepwater Marine Riser", focusing on experimental programs and field applications.
Dr. Wong leads research initiatives in geomechanics and sand management, collaborating with industry partners to address challenges in deepwater production and injection operations. His team conducts experimental and field studies to enhance well integrity and optimize sand control completions.
