George K. Behlmer is a Professor specializing in historical studies of colonial encounters, renowned for his monograph Risky Shores: Savagery and Colonialism in the Western Pacific (Stanford University Press, 2018). His work examines Anglophone perspectives on European-indigenous interactions in the Western Pacific, analyzing risk perception and cultural characterization during colonial expansion.
His research prominently intersects Colonial History and Pacific History, with deep engagement in 19th-20th Century History, Native American Studies, Comparative Colonialisms, and Empire Studies. He investigates how "white strangers and dark 'savages'" interpreted mutual risks through written, spoken, and inferred evidence, challenging conventional narratives of Pacific colonialism.
Professor Behlmer's scholarly impact is recognized through:
- Co-winner of the 2019 Stansky Book Prize awarded by the North American Conference on British Studies (NACBS)
