Dr. George Gross is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London’s Department of Theology & Religious Studies, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He co-founded the British Coronations Project, focusing on the historical, cultural, and religious dimensions of British coronations from 973 CE to the present. Educated at King’s College London and the University of Cambridge (Sidney Sussex College), his expertise spans the English Reformation, early modern religious-political thought, and the interplay between monarchy and national identity. His research has been featured in major media outlets including BBC, CNN, and The Times, and he frequently consults on historical documentaries and public events.
Dr. Gross’s work includes co-editing Reformation Reputations (2020) and authoring articles on coronation ceremonies, Anglo-Russian communications under Ivan IV and Elizabeth I, and socio-cultural perspectives on wine in coronation contexts. He lectures on Reformation history, British Christianity, and ceremonial history, and co-convenes the ‘Religious History of Britain, 1500–1800’ seminar at the Institute of Historical Research.
His recent research highlights include a forthcoming monograph on British coronations’ role in shaping national identity, surveys on public perceptions of the monarchy among children, and analysis of King Charles III’s 2023 coronation. Dr. Gross has advised on historical content for Sky News, Associated Press, and BBC productions, emphasizing the enduring relevance of coronations in contemporary society.
