Dr. George Fortune is a Bye-Fellow at St. Catharine's College and a Researcher at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on combining mathematical modeling with experimentation to study fluid dynamics in biological systems, such as ciliary flows in sinuses, biofilm growth, and decontamination processes. He holds a PhD from DAMTP and a BA/MMath from Trinity College Cambridge. His work bridges environmental and industrial challenges, emphasizing holistic approaches that integrate theoretical and experimental methods.
Education:
- PhD (2018-2022), DAMTP, University of Cambridge
- BA/MMath (2014-2018), Mathematics, Trinity College Cambridge
Research interests include fluid dynamics of biological systems, ciliary transport, biofilm mechanics, and collective behavior in organisms. His experimental work spans tabletop laboratory setups and field studies, often collaborating with experimentalists to validate theoretical models. Recent projects investigate the transport of debris by ciliary carpets and the dynamics of hazardous material decontamination.
Teaching includes supervisions for undergraduate mathematics and natural sciences courses, as well as lecturing Fluid Mechanics modules. He has served as a referee for Physical Review Fluids and Physical Review E since 2021. His research group, Environmental and Industrial Fluid Dynamics, explores interdisciplinary applications of fluid dynamics to real-world problems.
