George Chumanov is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Clemson University's College of Science. He earned BS/MS and PhD degrees in Physics with a focus on optics, spectroscopy, and quantum electronics. His doctoral research investigated Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) in amino acids and proteins. He completed postdoctoral training at Iowa State University studying SERS in photosynthetic reaction centers and later served as a Staff Scientist at Ames Laboratory (U.S. Department of Energy), expanding his work to plasmonic nanoparticles and interfacial electron transfer.
His research encompasses:
- Development of nanostructures for analytical applications
- Plasmonics and spectroscopy techniques for biomolecules
- Advanced microscopy methods (electron/probe microscopy)
- Novel analytical approaches in nanotechnology
He is dedicated to student training and enjoys outdoor activities like mountain climbing and biking.
