George Anthony Calvert Murrell

Professor George Anthony Calvert Murrell is an orthopaedic surgeon and Director of the Orthopaedic Research Institute at St George Hospital, holding a Conjoint Professorship at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). A 1984 South Australian Rhodes Scholar, he earned his DPhil at Oxford where he was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons Arris and Gale Medal, completed orthopaedic training at Duke University, and pursued a fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

His research focuses on the understanding, diagnosis, and management of shoulder disorders, with particular expertise in arthroscopic shoulder surgery, tendinopathy, and biomechanics. Professor Murrell serves on editorial boards for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Shoulder and Elbow, and Techniques in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, reflecting his standing in the orthopaedic community.

Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on rotator cuff repair techniques, shoulder biomechanics, and surgical outcomes. His work often involves large patient cohorts (up to 1500 consecutive cases) and combines biomechanical analysis with clinical outcomes to advance evidence-based practice in shoulder surgery.
