Georg W. Bertram, born in 1967, is Professor of Philosophy (with a focus on aesthetics and philosophy of language) at the Institute of Philosophy, Free University of Berlin. Since July 2022, he has served as Vice President for Appointments and Appointment Strategy (VP2) at the university. He is also Speaker of the Graduate College 2638 'Normativity, Critique, Change' and Project Leader in the Collaborative Research Center 'Intervening Arts' (Project B01: 'Improvisation as a Paradigm of Artistic Interventions').
His research spans theoretical philosophy with specializations in aesthetics, philosophy of language, hermeneutics, critical theory, and philosophy of German idealism (particularly Hegel). Bertram's work explores the relationship between artistic practices and normativity, improvisation as artistic intervention, the unity and conflict of arts, and the societal impact of aesthetic experience. His approach combines analytical precision with continental philosophical traditions, creating a unique perspective on contemporary philosophical issues.
Analysis of Bertram's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the intersection of aesthetics, normativity, and social theory. His work consistently examines how artistic practices challenge and transform social norms, with particular attention to improvisation as a paradigm for understanding artistic intervention in society. The research demonstrates a sophisticated engagement with Hegelian aesthetics while simultaneously addressing contemporary art forms and their social implications. Bertram's scholarship bridges traditional philosophical inquiry with cutting-edge investigations into the transformative potential of art in modern society.
Bertram has held significant leadership roles including Dean of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities (2019-2022), Managing Director of the Institute of Philosophy (2009-2011), and Deputy Managing Director (2011-2017). He has been Principal Investigator in multiple collaborative research projects including the International Graduate College InterArt (2010-2015) and the Collaborative Research Center 'Aesthetic Experience in the Context of the Dissolution of the Limits of the Arts' (2008-2014). Since 2010, he served as Trustee Professor of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation at FU Berlin until 2022.
Bertram leads significant research initiatives including the Graduate College 2638 'Normativity, Critique, Change' (since 2021), which examines how normative practices in art, law, religion, language, and morality both constrain and enable critical transformation. His current research team includes Einstein Visiting Fellow Prof. Alva Noë and focuses on 'Reorganizing Ourselves: The Transformative Potential of Philosophy and Art.' The research group operates within the broader framework of collaborative projects including the 'Intervening Arts' CRC and the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School for Literary Studies.
