Geoffrey Rose serves as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University, where he directs the Institute of Transport Studies. His academic roles include leading the online Master of Transport degree program and teaching core courses CIV4283 Transport Planning and CIV5314 Planning Urban Transport Systems.
Professor Rose's research spans sustainable transport systems, with primary expertise in active transport, travel behavior analysis, and transport policy development. Current research initiatives examine micromobility regulation (focusing on electric bicycles, motorcycles, and mobility scooters), parking policy at railway stations and new developments, urban railway level crossing efficiency, and mobility-as-a-service frameworks. His work directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable cities and climate action.
Analysis of his 185+ publications reveals consistent focus on urban transport challenges through interdisciplinary lenses combining engineering, behavioral science, and policy analysis. Recent outputs (2021-2024) demonstrate increasing emphasis on equity dimensions of transport systems, particularly regarding immigrant communities and vulnerable road users.
Professor Rose actively supervises doctoral research and leads significant collaborative projects including:
- Commercial E-Bikes and Regulation (2025, with Delbosc & Lawrence)
- Safer Cycling and Urban Road Environment (2013-2019, ARC-funded with multiple partners)
- EcoDrive as Road Safety Tool (2007-2008, ATSB-funded)
His research attracts funding from major Australian transport bodies including VicRoads, Main Roads WA, Transport Accident Commission, and international partners like Portland State University. Current projects indicate strong engagement with real-world policy implementation through government and industry partnerships.
