Geoffrey Heeren is a Professor of Law and Director of the Immigration Litigation and Appellate Clinic at the University of Idaho's College of Law. He holds a B.A. in American History from the University of Chicago, a J.D. from New York University School of Law, and an LL.M. in clinical education from Georgetown Law. Before joining Idaho, he directed the Immigration Law Clinic at Valparaiso University and previously worked at Legal Aid Chicago, focusing on immigration litigation, appellate advocacy, and civil rights.
His research explores intersections of immigration law with constitutional history, crimmigration, administrative bureaucracy, and civil rights. Notable publications include analyses of historical legal frameworks (e.g., the Migration Clause), DACA employment rights, and refugee resettlement policies. He has also written extensively on deportation procedures, racialized criminalization in immigration law, and discovery rights in immigration courts.
Heeren’s teaching emphasizes experiential learning through clinics, where students represent clients in immigration appeals and litigation. He has supervised over 100 students in federal appellate cases and detention hearings. His work bridges academic scholarship with direct legal advocacy, particularly for marginalized immigrant communities.
Heeren has no listed scientific awards but is recognized for his clinical teaching excellence, having received distinction in clinical education during his LL.M. at Georgetown. His professional activities include legislative advocacy, legal writing on immigration policy, and interdisciplinary collaborations on human rights issues.
