Geoffrey (Jake) Gebbie is a Senior Scientist and J. Seward Johnson Chair in the Department of Physical Oceanography at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). His research focuses on linking physical oceanography with climate dynamics, leveraging paleoceanographic and instrumental data to understand historical and future climate changes. He specializes in reconstructing ocean circulation patterns over decadal to millennial timescales using inverse methods and numerical models.
Education: Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from MIT/WHOI Joint Program (2004); B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from UCLA (1997).
- Research Interests: Paleoceanography, climate variability, ocean heat and carbon dynamics, and the role of historical ocean data in climate projections.
- Awards: J. Seward Johnson Chair (2020–present), NASA Earth System Science Fellowship (2000–2003).
- Advising: Supervised multiple graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, including work on ocean heat content and glacial cycles.
- Labs/Teams: Involved in collaborative projects using numerical models and ocean data archives, such as the HMS Challenger observations and TMI (Total Matrix Intercomparison) framework.
