Geoffrey Farrell is a Professor of Hepatic Medicine at the ANU Medical School. Previously, he directed The Storr Liver Unit at Westmead Hospital (1993–2006) and held leadership roles including Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Sydney (1996–1997). His academic career spans over five decades, with significant contributions to liver disease research.
Education:
- Bachelor of Medicine from University of Tasmania (1970)
- MD under Lawrie Powell
- NHMRC CJ Martin Fellowship at UCSF (postdoctoral research)
Research Interests:
- Pioneering work in NASH and viral hepatitis
- Focus on hepatocellular carcinoma, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and drug-induced liver toxicity
- Author of foundational textbooks on NAFLD and over 220 peer-reviewed papers
Grants & Leadership:
- Chief Investigator on NHMRC Program Grants and CCRE initiatives
- NIH RO1 grant for hepatitis C pathogenesis research
- Over 28 NHMRC project grants held
Advising: Supervised >25 doctoral students, 8 of whom won Young Investigator Awards. His trainees have received 10 major early-career accolades.
