Geoffrey C. Trussell is the Chair and Doherty Professor in Marine and Environmental Sciences at Northeastern University. He also serves as Director of the Coastal Sustainability Institute & Marine Science Center and is Affiliated Faculty in Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on evolutionary and community ecology, particularly the ecological and evolutionary impacts of predation risk, inducible defenses, and climate change on coastal ecosystems. He leads major NSF-funded projects addressing food web resilience, coastal sustainability, and the evolutionary responses of species to environmental changes.
Trussell’s work emphasizes collaborative research with institutions like Yale University, Texas A&M, and Hokkaido University. His honors include AAAS Fellow, Ray Lankester Investigatorship, and Sigma Delta Tau’s Outstanding Professor award. He has secured grants as Principal Investigator for initiatives such as 'Adaptation and Resiliency of Food Webs in Response to Environmental Change' and 'Coastal Sustainability: Clean, Safe, Smart, and Equitable Communities.' His research bridges evolutionary biology, ecology, and applied sustainability challenges.
Key themes in his publications include transgenerational effects of predation risk, trait-mediated indirect interactions, and the cascading impacts of top predators. His work often integrates field experiments with theoretical models to explore how ecological communities respond to stressors like climate change and invasive species.
