Dr. Geoffrey Bird is a Professor at the School of Communication and Culture at Royal Roads University in Victoria, Canada, with over 30 years of experience in education, government, and heritage sectors. His research focuses on war heritage, film-making, sustainability, and globalization. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Brighton (2011), an MSc in Training from the University of Leicester (1998), and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph (1990).
Geoffrey leads the War Heritage Research Initiative, producing documentaries and commemorative projects on Canadian military history, including the War Memories across Canada series. His work bridges academia, government, and public history, with projects funded by the Canadian Heritage Commemoration Fund and Valour Canada. He has contributed to policy discussions on tourism and heritage through publications like Globalization and Tourism and Marketing Dark Heritage.
His research also addresses Indigenous histories, such as the impact of uranium mining on Northern communities, and has been featured in The Conversation. He has held administrative roles including School Director and Program Head, and has worked internationally in Southeast Asia, Europe, and across Canada.
Geoffrey’s academic contributions span dark tourism theory, war memory studies, and heritage interpretation, with notable projects like the Moral Awakening documentary and the Commonwealth War Memory Pilot Project.
