Genuario Belmonte is a Full Professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies (DiSTeBA) at the University of Salento, Italy. He has held this position since September 2008 and is affiliated with the Ecotekne Center. His academic journey began at the University of Ferrara, where he earned degrees in Biological and Natural Sciences, and progressed through roles as Assistant Professor (1985) and Associate Professor (1998) at the University of Lecce (now Salento).
His primary research interests lie in marine biodiversity, zoogeography, systematics and taxonomy of Calanoid Copepoda, ecology of submerged sea caves, zooplankton in confined environments, life cycles and resistance stages, and the application of zoology to cultural heritage and naturalistic museology. His work bridges fundamental biological research with applied environmental science and public outreach.
The analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on Mediterranean marine ecosystems, particularly in Italy and Albania. His research integrates taxonomy, ecology, and paleoenvironmental studies, often examining the impacts of human activities and environmental stressors on planktonic and benthic communities. A recurring theme is the investigation of life history strategies, such as resting cysts and asexual propagation, as adaptations to unstable environments. His work also extends to marine conservation, bioinvasions, and the use of marine bioconstructions for paleoclimatic reconstruction.
- PhD Honoris Causa, University of Vlorë (AL), 2017
Belmonte has been a prolific researcher and educator, having coordinated 27 research projects (10 international) and collaborated with over 20 institutions worldwide.
