معرفی
Professor Genoveva Esteban of Bournemouth University is a leading microbial ecologist specializing in aquatic systems and cryptic biodiversity. Her research bridges fundamental science with conservation practice, focusing on the ecological significance of microscopic organisms in freshwater habitats, particularly through collaborations with Dorset Wildlife Trust and Pond Conservation Trust. She has pioneered the integration of cryptic biodiversity into management plans and contributed to a Nature correspondence on the topic.
- Education: PhD in Ecology of free-living freshwater protozoa from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1989)
Her scientific work examines microbial biodiversity at molecular and morphological levels, emphasizing ciliates in extreme environments. Recent publications highlight glyphosate impacts on soil ciliates (2025), rare ciliate biogeography (2024), and European first records of Colpodidium caudatum (2023). She has co-edited special issues honoring Bland Finlay’s microbial research legacy (2023).
Esteban’s articles reveal trends in ciliate taxonomy, environmental toxicology, and symbiosis mechanisms. She investigates microbial responses to pollutants (copper/cypermethrin), biogeographic patterns, and evolutionary adaptations like hydrogenosome development.
- Scientific Awards:
- National House of Lords award (2010) for STEM outreach
- Runner-up, Society of Biology Science Communication Award (2013)
- Fellowships: Society of Biology (2013), Higher Education Academy (2012)
She mentors PhD students in ciliate ecology, toxicology, and conservation. Current grants include EU NASCO public engagement funding (2020) and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation support for fenland biodiversity studies (2012). Her outreach includes Meet the Scientist Day (2014) and international conference presentations.
