Genevieve Bell is the 13th Vice-Chancellor and Distinguished Professor at the Australian National University (ANU). She holds a PhD in cultural anthropology from Stanford University and has spent over two decades in Silicon Valley at Intel Corporation, guiding product development through anthropological insights. As ANU's first female Vice-Chancellor, she leads the institution while maintaining her academic focus on cybernetics, AI ethics, and sociotechnical systems.
Her career includes founding ANU's 3A Institute (2017) and launching the School of Cybernetics (2021), which explores safe and ethical AI integration. She also serves on Australia's Prime Minister’s National Science and Technology Council and is a Fellow of the Australian Academies of Technology & Engineering and Humanities.
Research interests span AI’s societal impact, cybernetic systems, and future technologies. Notable works include One complete system? Telegraphy, cybernetics and industrial archaeology (2025) and Backbones and Blueprints: cybernetic approaches to the Metaverse (2023). Her 2024 Policy Forum Pod interview highlights leadership in academia and technology governance.
Awards include Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), Florence Violet McKenzie Chair, and Engelbart Distinguished Fellow. She chairs projects on AI ethics, robotic systems, and transdisciplinary research, emphasizing cybernetics as a tool for societal transformation.
