Gene Preuss

Dr. Gene Preuss is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Humanities and Languages at the University of Houston-Downtown. His teaching and research focus on Texas Educational History and the experiences of minorities in education, spanning topics like Texas history, the U.S. South, American West, Mexican-American history, and African-American history.

• PhD in History from Texas Tech University (2004)
• MA in History at Texas State University (1993)
• BA in History at Texas State University (1990)

His research explores Texas educational reforms, particularly through works such as To Get a Better School System (2009) and analyses of post-WWII policies like the Gilmer-Aikin Laws. His publications also address cultural conflicts in historiography, disaster studies (e.g., Hurricane Katrina), and minority educational experiences in Texas from 1910 to the 20th century.

Dr. Preuss teaches undergraduate courses on Texas History, U.S. History after 1877, and specialized seminars on topics like the American West and Mexican-American history. He also supervises graduate-level seminars in Texas History and courses on 20th-century England.
