Gene Pokorny serves as Artist Faculty in Music at Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts. He has been principal tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1989, with prior appointments at the Israel Philharmonic, Utah Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. His performance career spans orchestral, chamber, opera, and film music, including scores for Jurassic Park and The Fugitive.
Pokorny specializes in tuba performance and low brass artistry, advancing pedagogical techniques through educational seminars and resource development. His work bridges professional orchestral practice with academic instruction, emphasizing brass ensemble performance and historical repertoire interpretation.
His distinguished recognitions include:
- Outstanding Alumnus Award from University of Southern California
- Honorary Doctorate from University of Redlands
He mentors emerging musicians through annual low brass seminars at the University of Redlands alongside trombonists Dr. Andrew Glendening, Michael Mulcahy, and Randy Hawes. Pokorny has produced educational materials including solo CDs and collaborated with Rolling Stones trombonist Michael Davis on the Twenty Minute Warm-Up instructional resource.
Active beyond the symphony, he performs clarinet with the Do-It-Yourself Sousa Band and maintains strong ties to Southern California, where he grew up near the Apollo command module manufacturing site in Downey.
