Gene Frantz is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University. Prior to joining Rice in 2012, he spent 39 years at Texas Instruments, where he contributed to groundbreaking work in digital signal processing (DSP) technology. He holds a BSEE from the University of Central Florida (1971), an MSEE from Southern Methodist University (1977), and an MBA from Texas Tech University (1982).
His research focuses on digital signal processing systems and their applications across industries. Notable achievements include co-developing the TMS5100 speech synthesis chip for Texas Instruments' Speak & Spell toy, which revolutionized consumer electronics and DSP adoption. Frantz has been recognized for his contributions with prestigious awards, including IEEE Fellow (2001), National Academy of Engineers membership (2020), and the AeA Texas Legends Award (2007).
His career highlights include shaping DSP's transition from niche military/academic use to widespread consumer and industrial applications. Frantz also played a key role in expanding DSP education through partnerships with universities, enabling broader market adoption of DSP technologies.
