Gemma Angel

Gemma Angel is a Lecturer in Museum Studies and Programme Director of the MA/MSc Museum Studies (campus-based) at the University of Leicester's School of Museum Studies. She holds a PhD from University College London (UCL), completed in collaboration with the Science Museum London (2013). Her research focuses on the history and anthropology of European tattoos, museum collections, medical material culture, and human remains in museum contexts. She previously taught at the University of Oxford as a Lecturer in Visual Material & Museum Anthropology.

Her doctoral work examined a 19th-century medical collection of 300 preserved tattooed human skins archived at the Science Museum London. She is currently preparing a book manuscript on this collection. Her interdisciplinary expertise spans fine art tattooing, history of art, and visual anthropology.

Education: PhD from UCL (2013), with prior training in fine art tattooing, history of art, and visual anthropology.
