Geet George is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. His research centers on tropical cloud dynamics and mesoscale circulations, leveraging airborne and satellite observations.
Education:
- Ph.D. Earth Sciences (magna cum laude), 2018–2021, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology / IMPRS & University of Hamburg
- M.Tech. Environmental Engineering, 2015–2017, IIT Kanpur
- B.Tech. Civil Engineering (Hons.), 2009–2014, CEPT University
Research Interests:
George investigates how tropical clouds interact with mesoscale atmospheric circulations, with a particular focus on Shallow Mesoscale Overturning Circulations (SMOCs) in trade-wind regions. His work integrates dropsonde data, aircraft campaigns (HALO-(AC)³, EUREC⁴A), and satellite remote sensing to quantify cloudiness and atmospheric dynamics. He emphasizes open-source data and software to advance community research.
Scientific Impact:
His 2023 Nature Geoscience paper documented widespread shallow circulations in the trades, while a 2022 Nature study elucidated how strong cloud–circulation coupling weakens trade-cumulus climate feedback. These high-impact publications underscore his leadership in tropical atmospheric science.
Field & Collaborative Work:
- Principal Investigator for HALO aircraft flights during EUREC⁴A (Barbados, Jan 2020) and HALO-(AC)³ (Kiruna, Apr 2022)
- Visiting researcher at CNRM/MeteoFrance, Toulouse (2022)
- Postdoctoral researcher, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (2021–2023)
Labs & Teams:
George is affiliated with the GRS Lab (Geoscience & Remote Sensing Laboratory) at TU Delft, contributing to its atmospheric science and remote-sensing research clusters.
