Dr. Gea Zijlstra is a Researcher at Utrecht University's Department of Marine Palynology & Palaeoceanography within the Faculty of Earth Sciences. Since 1972, she has been a core contributor to the Index Nominum Genericorum (ING), an international project co-managed with the Smithsonian Institution to catalog generic names for algae, fungi, and plants. Her work focuses on resolving nomenclatural homonyms and ensuring taxonomic accuracy, particularly for fossil plants. She transitioned to this specialized role in 2008 after the closure of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands' Utrecht branch. Zijlstra also participates in proposing name conservation under the ICN and collaborates globally with taxonomists. She holds a biology degree from Utrecht University (1968), with expertise in plant systematics and vegetation science.
- Affiliations: Utrecht University (since 1972), Smithsonian Institution (collaborative role)
- Education: Biology studies (1961–1968) at Utrecht University, focusing on plant sociology, taxonomy, physiology, and phytopathology.
Research Interests: Her work centers on botanical nomenclature standards, fossil plant name indexing, and resolving taxonomic conflicts through the ICN framework. She actively contributes to digital curation of ING data and collaborates on proposals to conserve valid generic names. Her historical contributions include co-authoring ING supplements and transitioning the project to an online platform in 1996.
Labs/Teams: Part of the Marine Palynology group, previously affiliated with the Laboratory of Palaeobotany and Palynology (2012–present).
