Professor Gaëlle Bruneteau is a neurologist specializing in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and serves as the principal investigator of the MSDAvenir-supported SONOSLA project. She works at the Neurology Department of Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, coordinating a national clinical research network on ALS under F-CRIN. Her research focuses on ALS pathophysiology and therapeutic strategies, particularly leveraging the SonoCloud device to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier for enhanced drug delivery. The project aims to evaluate safety and efficacy in slowing ALS progression, using neurofilament light chain biomarkers.
Her career began with a neurology residency at Pitié-Salpêtrière under Prof. Meininger, co-discoverer of Riluzole. She has developed research projects on ALS mechanisms and clinical trials. Key challenges include understanding diverse ALS pathologies and advancing targeted therapies. The SONOSLA project’s success could revolutionize ALS treatment by improving drug penetration into the nervous system.
Collaboration with Prof. Alexandre Carpentier’s team underscores her work’s interdisciplinary nature. The MSDAvenir support enables expanded patient recruitment, bridging safety assessments and efficacy signals. While no curative treatments exist yet, her research offers hope for improved patient outcomes through innovative approaches.
