Professor Alexandre Carpentier is the Head of Neurosurgery and leader of the SonoSLA project at Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital – AP-HP Sorbonne University. His clinical work focuses on brain tumors and epilepsy, performing nearly 200 neurosurgical interventions annually. He earned medical and science doctorates from Paris VI and Yale University. His research bridges physics and biology, including pioneering functional MRI studies in epilepsy (NeuroImage 2000) and the world's first closed-skull laser treatments for brain tumors (Neurosurgery 2008). Since 2010, he has pioneered ultrasound-based blood-brain barrier opening, published in Science Translational Medicine and The Lancet Oncology. He founded CarThera to commercialize his innovations. Leadership roles include President of the Pitié Salpêtrière Research Commission (2011–present) and Board Member of the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound.
Education: Medical thesis at Paris VI, followed by a science thesis at Paris VI/Yale. Key achievements include FDA/CE validated laser probes for brain tumor ablation, and the SonoSLA clinical trial for ALS. Supported by MSDAvenir and French Ministry of Health, his work addresses critical barriers in neurological drug delivery.
