Gaye Theresa Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her work focuses on race and racism, cultural history, spatial politics, and political economy, particularly in the context of civil rights struggles and expressive cultures of resistance.
Education:

- BA in Sociology and Ethnic Studies, University of California, San Diego (1998)
Her research examines the intersections of Black and Brown freedom movements, immigrant detention, and mass incarceration through historical, cultural, and political economic lenses. She has explored these themes in her book Spaces of Conflict, Sounds of Solidarity and in an edited volume The Futures of Black Radicalism.
Scientific Awards:
- 2013 Freedom Now! Award for activism and advocacy in housing and civil rights.
Johnson is actively engaged with the Los Angeles Community Action Network and serves on the board of directors for the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE), as well as the advisory board for the Rosenberg Fund for Children.
