Gay Lynch

Gay Lynch is a Full Time Assistant Professor in the Humanities department at Dominican University's School of Liberal Arts and Education. She earned her BA in Religious Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, an MTS in Religions of the World from Harvard Divinity School, and a PhD in Cultural and Historical Study of Religions from the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley. Her academic career, which began at age 50, is deeply intertwined with her personal journey, including the profound loss of her youngest son in 1991, which inspired her focus on cross-cultural responses to death and ritual.

Gay Lynch’s research explores intersections of religion, ritual, and human experience. Her work on compassion, forgiveness, death, and spiritual expression in global contexts is complemented by studies of dance as a religious practice and the symbolic language of gravemarkers. Her publications span topics from ancient Greek funerary rites to contemporary memorials, reflecting her commitment to bridging scholarly rigor with lived realities.

Her scholarly output focuses on cross-cultural death rituals, gravemarker symbolism, and the role of bodily movement in spiritual practices. These works highlight continuity between ancient and modern traditions while analyzing how societies navigate grief and memory through material culture.
