Gavin Ian Cameron is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary and a Fellow at the Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies (CMSS), where he also serves as Co-Editor of the Journal of Military & Strategic Studies.
His educational background includes:
- B.A. in History from the University of Nottingham (1993)
- Master in Literature in International Security Studies from the University of St. Andrew's (1995)
- Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of St. Andrew's (1998)
Dr. Cameron's research centers on International Relations with deep expertise in Terrorism and Counterterrorism, Intelligence, and International Security. His work uniquely bridges Historical Approaches to International Relations with contemporary policy analysis, particularly focusing on Canada's strategic positioning in the Indo-Pacific through initiatives like the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad). This dual emphasis on theoretical foundations and real-world applications defines his scholarly contributions.
His recent publications, including the 2024 Journal of Military & Strategic Studies article on Canada-Quad cooperation, reveal a consistent trajectory examining how middle powers navigate complex security architectures. These works demonstrate methodological rigor in connecting historical patterns of violence with current counterterrorism frameworks and regional diplomatic strategies.
While no major scientific awards are documented in available materials, his editorial leadership of the Journal of Military & Strategic Studies underscores significant scholarly recognition.
Dr. Cameron has secured SSHRC funding for collaborative research, notably the "Oddities of Violence" project analyzing terrorism and genocide through philosophical lenses. As an educator, he teaches core courses including POLI 381 (Introduction to International Relations) and specialized graduate seminars like POLI 689 (Unconventional Warfare), shaping next-generation security analysts.
Through the CMSS, he actively contributes to Calgary's strategic studies ecosystem, fostering interdisciplinary research on military affairs and global security challenges while mentoring emerging scholars in the field.
