Gavin Fridell is a University Research Professor in Political Science and Global Development Studies at Saint Mary’s University. He holds a PhD in Political Science from York University and has served as the Canada Research Chair in International Development Studies (2012–2022). His research focuses on fair trade, free trade, psychoanalytic theory, and global political economy, with a recent emphasis on decarbonization and green trade. He is affiliated with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ Trade and Investment Research Project (TIRP).

Research Interests:
Dr. Fridell examines trade policy’s material and ideological dimensions, including global supply chains, climate change, and the unconscious desires driving economic behavior. Current projects explore green trade frameworks and the symbolic role of trade in capitalist modernity.
