Gaurav Datt serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Monash University and holds the position of Deputy Director at the Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability. He joined Monash University in August 2011 after accumulating over twenty years of research and operational experience in the development sector. His professional background includes research positions at the World Bank and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington D.C., with recent work at the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Department of the World Bank's East Asia and South Asia Regions based in Sydney and Kathmandu.
Dr. Datt's research interests span across multiple critical areas of development economics. His work primarily focuses on poverty analysis, income distribution patterns, and social policy frameworks. His research portfolio encompasses a diverse geographical scope including India, China, Egypt, Laos, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Timor-Leste. His recent scholarly output demonstrates a strong emphasis on contemporary development challenges, with particular attention to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental economics as it relates to health outcomes, and innovative approaches to poverty measurement.
