Gary S. Fischer, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He serves as Associate Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Program Director of the UPMC Clinical Informatics Fellowship, and Medical Director for Clinical Decision Support and Analytics. Dr. Fischer completed his MD at Harvard Medical School (1990), residency at Massachusetts General Hospital (1993), and a Medical Ethics fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh (1995).
His research focuses on leveraging health information technology to improve clinical outcomes, including:
- Clinical decision support systems for quality improvement
- Patient-facing digital tools for chronic disease management
- Ethical implications of AI in healthcare
- Ambulatory care innovation and patient-provider communication
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on optimizing EHR systems for clinical decision-making, preventive care interventions, and ethical technology implementation in primary care settings, with notable work on opioid safety protocols and vaccination adherence.
