Gary Lynch, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine, holding dual appointments in the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior and the Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology. His research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's, with an emphasis on lysosomal enzyme dynamics (e.g., cathepsin D) and brain aging mechanisms. Lynch's work examines how these processes manifest across species, including dogs and rats, to identify generalized patterns of neural degeneration.

His studies have revealed correlations between elevated cathepsin D levels and intraneuronal tangles in Alzheimer's, as well as age-related changes in brain structure.
