Gary Lupyan is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, part of the College of Letters & Science. His research explores how language shapes human cognition and perception, investigating topics such as language-augmented cognition, the interplay between linguistic structure and social dynamics, and the neural mechanisms underlying conceptual representation. He directs the Lupyan Lab, which employs experimental, computational, and cross-linguistic methods to address questions about language’s role in perception, categorization, and memory.
Key research themes include: 1) How labels and language influence visual perception and memory, 2) How grammatical and semantic structures reflect communicative needs of populations, and 3) The role of 'nameability' in category learning. His work has been featured in outlets like Trends in Cognitive Sciences, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and popular media including the New York Times and NPR. He has received funding from NSF and the Sloan Foundation for projects on linguistic niche hypothesis and scientific tool influence on cognition.
