Gary Love

Gary Love is a Full Professor of British History and Culture at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), part of the Department of Language and Literature within the Faculty of Humanities. His expertise centers on twentieth-century British political history, particularly the Conservative Party’s intellectual and transnational dynamics, and the role of political writing in public discourse.

Love holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2010), supervised by Jon Lawrence. Before joining NTNU as an Associate Professor in British Social and Cultural Studies (2010), he taught at Cardiff University. He became a Full Professor at NTNU in 2020. His research has been funded by the Research Council of Norway (FRIPRO) and the UK’s AHRC, focusing on British-Scandinavian conservatism and political genres.

His research interests include Conservative Party politics, transnational conservatism, women in British politics, and the history of political writing. He is co-editing two books: Conservatism, Christian Democracy, and the Dynamics of Transformation and Genres of Political Writing in Britain since 1900.

Love has held visiting fellowships at Churchill College, Cambridge (2014–2018), and the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin (2018). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2021. His teaching includes courses on modern British history and supervision of PhD candidates focusing on British-Norwegian political exchanges and British foreign policy.

He maintains active engagement with media, providing expert commentary on British political events for Norwegian newspapers and radio. His work bridges academic research with public engagement, emphasizing the historical roots of contemporary political challenges.
