Dr. Gary Kopf is a Professor of Surgery (Cardiac) at Yale School of Medicine with over 30 years of expertise in adult and pediatric cardiac surgery. He graduated from Columbia College with a Physics degree and earned his MD from Harvard Medical School. His training includes residencies at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Boston, followed by NIH research on perinatal physiology. He holds leadership roles in ethics committees including Yale-New Haven Hospital’s Adult/Pediatric Ethics Committees and the Yale Bioethics Center’s Technology and Ethics Working Group. Notably, he is the only Yale surgeon with Health Ethics Consultant certification (HEC-C) from the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities.
His clinical specialties include Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Adult Congenital Heart Surgery, and Aortic Surgery. He has been honored as one of America’s Top Doctors, New York’s Best Doctors, and America’s Top Surgeons. Professional memberships include the American Association of Thoracic Surgery and the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society. His research focuses on arrhythmias, surgical techniques, and biomedical ethics. He collaborates frequently with colleagues like John Elefteriades and George Tellides on studies involving congenital heart defects and surgical innovations.
