Gary Kibbins is a Full Professor and Undergraduate Chair in the Film and Media department at Queen’s University. He holds a joint appointment with the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. A media artist and writer, he previously taught at the California Institute of the Arts until 2000. His research focuses on aesthetic theory, experimental media, image-text relations, and philosophical inquiries into art’s role in culture.
Key creative works include experimental films such as Worldless (2023), P&Not-P Learn Non-Euclidean Geometry (2022), and installations like X Marks (2019, with Matt Rogalsky). His 2005 essay collection Grammar & Not-Grammar explores nonsense in experimental cinema. Collaborations span disciplines, including a 2019 installation analyzing Finnegans Wake’s lexical patterns.
Media works often blend philosophical inquiry with visual experimentation, addressing themes like existential uncertainty (God Hates Himself), postcolonial legal frameworks (Mama Minde), and the limits of human understanding (7 Anthropologies). His practice bridges fine art, theory, and pedagogy through innovative multimedia formats.
