Dr. Gary K. Steinberg is the Bernard and Ronni Lacroute-William Randolph Hearst Professor of Neurosurgery and Neurosciences and Professor, by courtesy, of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He serves as Director of the Stanford Moyamoya Center, founder and Co-Director of the Stanford Stroke Center, and was former Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery from 1995 to 2020. With over 31 years of practice at Stanford, Dr. Steinberg specializes in cerebrovascular and skull base neurosurgery, treating complex conditions including brain aneurysms, moyamoya disease, vascular malformations, and stroke.

Dr. Steinberg's research focuses on understanding the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia and developing innovative treatments for stroke and cerebrovascular diseases. His laboratory investigates neuroprotective agents, stem cell transplantation, and optogenetic stimulation to enhance post-stroke functional recovery. Clinically, he pioneers novel surgical, endovascular, and radiosurgical approaches for treating intracranial aneurysms, vascular malformations, and moyamoya disease. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, with a particular emphasis on translating laboratory findings into therapeutic interventions for patients.
Dr. Steinberg's recent publications reveal a strong focus on moyamoya disease, stem cell therapy for stroke, and advanced surgical techniques for cerebrovascular pathologies. His research spans from molecular mechanisms of brain repair to large clinical outcomes studies, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to understanding and treating cerebrovascular disorders. The integration of cutting-edge technologies like optogenetics and stem cell therapy represents the innovative direction of his work.
- Bernard and Ronni Lacroute-William Randolph Hearst Professorship
Dr. Steinberg has mentored numerous students and researchers through his laboratory and clinical practice. His lab has been supported by various grants, including from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, as evidenced by his clinical trials on stem cell therapy for stroke. He leads multiple clinical trials investigating novel treatments for stroke, spinal cord injury, and cerebrovascular diseases, demonstrating his commitment to advancing therapeutic options for patients with limited treatment alternatives.
The Steinberg Lab at Stanford investigates multiple aspects of cerebrovascular disease and brain repair. The laboratory employs diverse methodologies including microsurgery, molecular biology techniques, MRI, electrophysiology, and behavioral analysis to study stroke pathophysiology and recovery mechanisms. The lab has made significant contributions to understanding stem cell-mediated brain recovery and the molecular pathways involved in post-stroke repair.
