Luis Savastano

Luis E. Savastano, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor in Neurological Surgery with a joint appointment in Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He is a vascular and endovascular neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive techniques for treating conditions involving arteries and veins of the brain, neck, and spine.

Dr. Savastano's research focuses on developing minimally invasive technologies and techniques for diagnosing and treating cerebrovascular diseases. His work spans vascular neurosurgery, endovascular techniques, stroke treatment, carotid artery disease, and innovative approaches to treating brain aneurysms, Moyamoya disease, and arteriovenous malformations. He has pioneered several endovascular devices and techniques to improve patient outcomes.

His recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on cerebrovascular disorders, particularly subdural hematoma treatment via middle meningeal artery embolization, advanced imaging of atherosclerotic plaques, mechanical thrombectomy techniques, and innovative approaches to complex cerebrovascular conditions. His work bridges clinical neurosurgery with engineering solutions for minimally invasive interventions.

Dr. Savastano previously served as an assistant professor of neurosurgery and radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota before joining the UCSF faculty. His research continues to advance the field of vascular neurosurgery through both clinical practice and technological innovation.
