Gary Johnson is a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Lake Forest College since 2019, directing its Entrepreneurship and Innovation program. He holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, an M.A. in Modern History from Oxford University, and a B.A. in History and Political Science from Yale University.
His expertise spans nonprofit leadership, intellectual property law, and museum management. He previously served as President of the Chicago History Museum (2005–2021), which earned national recognition, and as an attorney specializing in international business at Jones Day and Mayer Brown (1977–2005). He is a Rhodes Scholar and has led advocacy efforts for civil rights, ethics, and legal reform.
Johnson’s research and teaching focus on Chicago’s innovation landscape, nonprofit governance, and the intersection of law and entrepreneurship. His notable publication, Lessons Learned About Nonprofit Management and Finance, co-authored with Russell Lewis, addresses organizational challenges in the nonprofit sector.

- Service: Chairs the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and Legal Aid Chicago, and leads the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
